The unfaithful Generation

a few thoughts have been running through my mind the past couple of weeks… they are… generations & faith.

everyone belongs to a generation… and throughout the bible generations played a significant role in the old testament.  A generation could bring glory to God under the right leadership, and crumble and fail under the wrong.  A generation could thrive and be blessed by God as they chose to follow Him whole heartedly, while a generation could be plagued with destruction if they chose to grumble against God.

Recently reading through the book of Deuteronomy I was extremely convicted by

Deuteronomy 1:34-36

34 When the LORD heard what you said, he was angry and solemnly swore: 35 “Not a man of this evil generation shall see the good land I swore to give your forefathers, 36 except Caleb son of Jephunneh. He will see it, and I will give him and his descendants the land he set his feet on, because he followed the LORD wholeheartedly.”

ONE| we see a generation missing out on what God had promised them because they made a fuss about the report about the land

TWO| we see that the next generation reaped the benefit of Caleb’s faith!

conclusion

i refuse to be a part of the generation that wandered the desert for 40 years

This lead me to think about faith… and I came to the conclusion that if we do not have faith in God then we will never fully trust in him.  It’s kind of like this experience I had with sitting on one of Torchies fold up chairs, which broke under my enormous weight (yes I was pretty huge back then)… i lost faith in the fold up chair and now-a-days I often opt to not sit on any type of fold up chair and if I have to i do it hesitantly and with heaps of fear!

Or imagine a friend you have that you put or your faith in, you entrust them with handing in your assignment because you are deadly sick only to find out at the end of the week when you get back to school that they never handed it in and you’ve failed the most important assignment of the term… you lose your faith in that particular friend and so you reluctantly trust them with important things…

It’s kind of the same with God… without faith in God there can be no room for Him to move… because we become rigid and unsure and unwilling to entrust God with even the small things like wisdom in an exam, blessings for tithing let alone our whole entire lives.

Hebrews 11:6
And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

Then I thought about… where is the faith in my generation?

and here is my final thought

I do not come from a faithless generation, I come from an unfaithful generation.

What’s the difference?  Faithless pretty much means the absence of faith, but I would define unfaithful as someone who has faith but chooses to use it in the wrong way.  In the context of this generation… we should be faithful to the God who created all things, that was, is and is to come, alpha & omega, beginning and the end, all knowing, omnipotent, omnipresent, loves, forgives, gives & takes away.  Yet this generation remains unfaithful to God by putting their trust in reality TV, alcohol, friends, careers, psychics, horoscopes, love, culture, belongings, reputations, boyfriends, girlfriends and the list goes on.

We all have faith in something… even the atheist has faith that there is no God, but that is faith none-the-less.  It’s like saying that a white lie isn’t a lie because it is beneficial… but even the english language describes a lie as a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive; an intentional untruth; a falsehood.  So a white lie is a lie none-the-less.

It’s not about telling this generation to have faith, because we’ve already got it… but its about telling this generation that they are putting their faith in the temporary when instead they should be investing it into the eternal

Matthew 6:19-21 (New International Version)

Treasures in Heaven

19“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

(500) Days of Summer

So upon hearing about the plot of this story described by the one and only Ashley Smith as “A love story from a guys perspective” aroused quite a bit of interest, as it probably does you as you read this first line.

But I was met with a spat of confusion as I had read a post by Nancy saying she didn’t want to see it but as I just now checked the post i realised that there was more to the post then the first line… that’s what I am now going to coin as… the male fail…

But last night after the most unspiritual night out after the most spiritual afternoon in (kudos to Chris Bee) and many debates, confused faces and ADDness we decided to see 500 Days of Summer… why… because the law of the universe of men and women states that when there is an equal ratio of boys to girls… girls win in the decision making process… yes I to just coined that law of the gender ratio

So here are my thoughts on (500) days of summer… click here to read Laurannes!

The tag line says it all… this is not a love story.  This is a story about love.

A movie about boys meets girl, boys falls in love with girl.  Girl doesn’t, breaks the mould of what you’d expect of a typical romantic comedy, or does it… Tom the male lead of the movie believes in love while Summer the female lead does not… apparently does not….

I really liked the film style of the movie and probably the unglamorous overall feel and look of the movie.  But what I didn’t like … was that although it was a move about love from a guys perspective… I instead felt like it was a movie about love with the rolls switched… Tom become the lovestruck female-esqe type character while Summer portrayed the free loving, no strings attached male-esqe type character.

It may not have been a love story in the conventional sense… but it was a love story none the less… because it was a story about failed love…  In a way I couldn’t help but feel that this movie was written and directed to give women a sense of empowerment.

the review which sums up basically how i felt reads

Too timid to be truly cynical about love and too eager for box-office success to try to be a really new kind of romantic comedy, the film fails the ultimate romantic-comedy test: not only does it lack enough laughs, but you’re never emotionally involved.

I can’t help but wonder why rottentomatoes.com labeled this review as a good review

It is hardly the freshest romantic comedy of the past 20 years. Taking the best bits from other movies and rearranging them in a non-linear sequence does not make for an original film.

Overall a movie that attempts to break the mold of a Hollywood romantic comedy but lacks in substance and drive… I would rate this movie 5 out of 10 stars, but i will bump it up to a 6 because of its original film style and fairly unique plot.  But the real question is… would I pay to see it again… no.

BUT I would pay to see UP again =D
